The material covered in this DPS created course serves as an instructional guideline for the Texas License To Carry a handgun (LTC) instructors to use in accordance with the Texas Government Code §411.1901. This also meets the requirements outlined in Texas Education Code §37.0812 and is designed for school employees, including teachers, administrators, and support staff.

Who Can Take the Course?
School staff members employed by a Texas school district, charter school, private school, or public junior college who hold a valid Texas License To Carry a handgun (LTC) Certification.

Course Curriculum
Tactical strategies to avoid an active shooter
Learn situational awareness, threat assessment, and preventative measures.
Denying intruder access
Explore defensive tactics for securing classrooms and facilities.
Protecting students in emergency situations
Methods and mindset for defending students during critical incidents.
Interaction with first responders
Understand protocols and communication strategies with law enforcement.
Handgun proficiency under duress
Train to maintain control, accuracy, and decision-making in high-stress scenarios.
Course Components
Classroom instruction & safety procedures
Active shooter response tactics
Including real-life school defense applications.
Scenario-based practical exercises
Simulated school-based emergencies to practice response in real time.
Live-fire handgun training
Participants must bring a personal handgun and a minimum of 200 rounds of ammunition. Ammunition and firearms must meet safety and eligibility requirements.
Certification & Testing Requirements
Written Exam
A 90% or higher is required to pass the course.
The written exam is 30 questions. A student must get 27 correct to pass.
Live Fire Qualification
Participants must achieve a minimum score of 90% in handgun proficiency testing.
Max is 250, ergo you must score 225 or higher
Upon successful completion, participants will receive:
Documentation of live-fire and written exam completion
A School Safety Certification, valid in accordance with Texas state requirements
A certification that proves you have completed the required training and is filed with Texas DPS as part of your LTC.
